Casamance Travel Guide: The Garden of Senegal

Separated from the rest of Senegal by the Gambia, the Casamance is a world entirely of its own. Lush tropical forests, deep winding bolongs, vibrant Diola culture, and the endless white sands of Cap Skirring await.

The Casamance Vibe

Located south of The Gambia, the Casamance feels almost like a different country compared to northern Senegal. Characterized by lush tropical scenery, massive kapok (fromager) trees, sprawling mangrove systems, and the wide Casamance River, this region operates at a distinctly slower rhythm. It is the heartland of the Diola people, known for their strong animist traditions, rice farming heritage, and fiercely independent spirit.

Highlights & Must-Sees

1. Cap Skirring & Boucotte

If you are looking for some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in West Africa, Cap Skirring and the neighboring Boucotte beach are where you want to be. The sand is soft and white, the ocean is generally calm and warm, and the shoreline is backed by rustling palm trees. Cap Skirring has excellent resorts, lively beachfront bars, and a laid-back surfer vibe.

2. Ziguinchor

The capital of the region, Ziguinchor, sits on the banks of the Casamance River. It features fading colonial architecture, a bustling local market (Marché Saint-Maur), and a vibrant artisan village. It's the perfect base to arrange pirogue (traditional canoe) tours into the deeper bolongs (saltwater channels) to spot exotic birds and dolphins.

3. Carabane Island (Île de Carabane)

Accessible only by boat, Carabane was an important trading post in the 19th century. Today, it has no roads, no cars, and remains profoundly peaceful. You can visit the ruins of ancient trading houses, a Breton-style church, and the peculiar cemetery where a French captain was buried standing up at his request.

4. Oussouye & Edionou

Oussouye is a deeply traditional town located between Ziguinchor and Cap Skirring. It is the seat of a revered animist King who presides over conflict resolution. Take a guided mountain bike or walking tour through the magnificent sacred forests filled with gigantic kapok trees.
