How it works

Forget the classic cooking class built around a single dish. Here you step into Fatou's kitchen in Liberté 1 and learn to make, with your own hands, the snacks Senegalese people actually eat every day. We start with fatayas: you prepare the homemade filling and the sauces that go with them, then shape them yourself. Flour everywhere and plenty of laughs, while Fatou handles the frying. Next come the black-eyed-pea accras (fully plant-based, peanut-free), then sweet Senegalese doughnuts. For drinks, everyone tastes bissap and baobab (bouye) juice, made right in front of you. When everything is ready, we set the table and sit down together, the real family-home moment. Fatou serves the ataya (Senegalese tea, and the art of frothing it) while the group eats, and thiakry arrives for dessert. Small group of 8 guests maximum. All drinks are made with filtered water and purified ice. Peanut-free menu by default, vegetarian and vegan options at no extra charge. English-speaking host facilitator throughout the workshop.

My experience with Safari Senegal was the highlight of my whole stay in Dakar. Fatou welcomed me like a queen: she introduced the ingredients, taught us to cook, served endless bissap and baobab juice, we danced to Youssou N'dour, learned the art of frothing the ataya tea, and laughed the whole time. Thank you to Cheikh, to Fatou and to her kitchen helper Astou!

Outstanding cooking class in Dakar! It was a wonderful experience. It wasn't just about learning a recipe, but really understanding the culture, the traditions and the everyday life behind Senegalese cooking. Everything was explained to us, including a few personal cooking secrets. The atmosphere was warm and the meal absolutely delicious.

FAQ

Do we cook thieb?+

No, and that's on purpose. We focus on everyday snacks (fatayas, accara): more hands-on, more variety, you're in the dough from the start instead of watching a dish simmer.

Does the menu contain peanuts?+

No. The menu is peanut-free by default. Tell us about any allergy or diet when you book: the menu is also vegetarian and vegan friendly at no extra charge.

Is the water safe for the preparations?+

Yes. All drinks (bissap, bouye) are made with filtered water and purified ice. Nothing to worry about.

How do I pay?+

You reserve your seat online and settle the balance in cash (CFA) on the day. Remember to change money before the workshop.

Where is the workshop and how do I get there?+

In a family home in Liberté 1 (Dakar), about 20 min from Plateau and Almadies hotels. The exact address is sent after booking. Transport is not included.

How many people are in the group?+

8 guests maximum. It's a real family kitchen: we keep the group small so everyone gets hands-on.
