Sine-Saloum Delta Tour from Dakar — Mangroves, Waterways & Island Villages

NatureUNESCOOvernight

The Sine-Saloum Delta is the Senegal you won't find on postcards — and that's exactly what makes it unforgettable. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this labyrinth of mangroves, waterways and stilt villages is home to hundreds of bird species and Serer communities still living to the rhythm of the tides. You board a motorized pirogue and lose yourself in a maze of water and green. Pelicans, herons and egrets fly overhead while your guide takes you to villages no tour bus ever reaches. Grilled fish lunch on an island, horse-drawn carriage ride through a salt-harvesting village, night at an ecolodge overlooking the waterways. Two days to understand why the Saloum is Senegal's best-kept secret.

What to expect

We pick you up at your hotel in Dakar and head south. Along the way, a stop at a bush market where locals haggle, laugh and roast peanuts — welcome to rural Senegal. At the Saloum, you board a pirogue and lose yourself in a maze of mangroves. Pelicans soar overhead, herons land just meters away. Grilled fish lunch on an island, then off to Palmarin for a horse-drawn carriage ride through the salt mines. The night at the ecolodge facing the waterways is the kind of silence that does you good. Next morning, on to Joal-Fadiouth: an entire island built on seashells, a cemetery where Muslims and Christians rest side by side, and the house where Senghor grew up. Two days that change how you see Senegal.
